With Instagram and Tiktok outgrowing every other social media day by day, the number of trends on these platforms seems to rise at the same rate. And one of them is something we all love with all of our hearts - food. Food has a major impact on our health, lifestyle, socializing and the content we see online. Taking pictures of food, posting recipes online and cooking tips made things like Salt Bae, Dalgona Coffee, and açai bowls very popular. Those beautiful Açai bowls, looking like a rainbow in a little bowl became very “instagramable” and completely won over the Fitness community as a “superfood”. But, are these vibrant bowls as healthy as they seem? Maybe you’re asking yourself, how could that yummy superfood loaded with fruits and nuts be unhealthy at all? Well, let’s first break down what is this açai thing we’re talking about. This fruit is actually a berry (but probably sold frozen or powdered in your local stores) that comes from the açai palm which most often grows in South American countries Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, and Bolivia. And because the global demand for them increased aggressively in these past years, the tree itself is now cultivated primarily for its black-purple berries. When it comes to its nutritional value, 100 grams of açai berries contain about 125 calories, 3.6 grams of fat, 1.8 grams of protein and 21 grams of carbohydrates (11 grams of sugar and 4 grams of fiber). Compared to the similar-looking blueberries that contain about 57 calories in 100 grams, 14.5 grams of carbohydrates, and 0.7 grams of protein, this fruit is a bit more intense. Additionally, they are high in vitamin C, antioxidants, and potassium. Sounds pretty healthy? Well, yes, actually Açai berries, like blackberries or raspberries, are good for our immune system and the cardiovascular system. So maybe, the problem seems to be in these other ingredients that make an açai bowl. But what can be unhealthy about nuts or seeds? Please be aware that we are definitely not saying that these ingredients are bad for you or regarded as unhealthy, but fruits and granola do contain sugars - maybe just not the regular ones. And what is sugar after all? Carbohydrates, sugars, or starches are organic compounds that contain chains of chemical elements carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen. Every kind of sugar eventually will be simplified to the most basic one - glucose with the molecular formula C6H12O6. So basically, an apple and a chocolate bar will be broken down in the same way. However, what matters is the rate at which the sugar is absorbed, other nutrients from a certain food, and the fact that our organisms need carbohydrates in order to function. That’s why you can hear the famous saying: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”, but not:” A bag of chips a day keeps the doctor away.” The World Health Organization suggests that adults and children should reduce the consumption of added (or free) sugars to less than 10% daily energy intake, which basically means sticking to 25 to 30 grams of sugar a day should be fine. Also, nuts and nut butters are naturally high in calories because of their fat content (but still the healthy kind!), so putting a lot of these mentioned foods can lead to calorie sufficiency and later weight gain. Again, we are not saying that these foods are not healthy by any means, but just telling that balance is needed. We have previously said, that açai berries (because of their vulnerability) are not often available fresh, but powdered or frozen in stores. The manufacturers may add other ingredients like sugar and preservatives to prolong their shelf life. A 170 grams big açai bowl pack has about 11 grams of added sugar! So you’re maybe not eating pure açai, but a very sugary mixture. Added sugar is proven to increase risks for many diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart, liver, and skin problems.
